127. Today I am grateful for the past year

As we prepare to leave 2011 behind and welcome in 2012 I think it is a good time to reflect on the past year. I am truly grateful for the past year and feel that it has opened a new chapter in my life with beginning a career. This time last year I had completed all my course work and getting ready to begin my practicum. My practicum was with Crossroad Family Services, a foster care agency. I was able to learn a lot about the foster care system and the support that both foster children and foster families require. My practicum also helped prepare me for the job I have now as a family support worker for a Head Start Program. I am grateful for my education and the career path that I am on now. However, the career I desire the most is to be a mother, I am happy with the career path I am on now.

I also moved out of a place where I had lived for almost 4 years and it was a change that I really needed for several reasons. I was blessed with the opportunity to live in the compassion house as a live in volunteer which included free accommodation and the opportunity to associate with some amazing people. I then found a great place to live in September. Looking back, I can really see the hand of the Lord in leading me to where I need to be.

I am also grateful for the times I was able to spend with my family. It was great to have all of my family members come out to Edmonton to visit me on three separate occasions, including for my convocation. I am also grateful for the times I have been able to visit my family out in BC and Utah, as well as Scotland. It was wonderful to be able to see my Grandma again as well as cousins, aunts and uncles. I have also had some memorable moments with friends, including being part of a wedding. 2011 was a good year! I am excited to see what 2012 has in store.

126. Today I am grateful to be in Utah!

I am so grateful that I was able to get two weeks off work and to split that time between BC and Utah and see everyone in my family. I don’t get to see Melissa very often so I am always grateful for the time we get to spend together. Melissa has a baby due any day now and I really hope I get to see him while I am here. I am also excited to spend some time with my nieces, they are so much fun! At the airport my two older nieces, Sariah and Rebekah, were excited to see me and gave me a hug but the 18 month old, Miriam,  was a little unsure. I picked her up and right away she put her arms out to her mom. However in the car I sat beside her and gave her smarties and then at their home I gave the girls their Christmas gifts. Miriam loved her baby doll and now I’m her best friend. I work hard to be the favourite Auntie. J

125. Today I am grateful for getting together with old friends

Even though I live in Edmonton now and met so many wonderful people and have met great friends it is nice to get together with the friends I have here in Surrey. I had one friend over and we played phase 10 ... just like old times. Another friend and I went out to Tim Horton’s and it was nice to chat and catch up on our lives.

124.Today I am grateful for a date with my parents

Tonight I went to the nutcracker ballet with my parents at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. It was so amazing! I was just mesmerized by the amazing talent on stage, the dancing was beautiful as well as the music from the Vancouver symphony. It was also great to spend the evening with my parents, I am grateful that they thought of me.

123. Today I am grateful for the family dogs

Couper
My family has always had dogs. Our first was an Old English Sheep dog named Bonnie, next was a Cocker Spaniel named Bailey, and then another Cocker Spaniel named Lucky. Then a little Yorkshire terrier named Minnie who we currently have, another Yorkie named Scamp (who ran away ... just like the Scamp he was named after from Lady and the Tramp) and then we got another Yorkie named Couper who will still have. My Sister, Alex also recently got her own dog named Molly who is a really cute dog. However don’t tell Minnie or Molly but Couper is everyone’s favourite.

There aren’t many movies I have actually cried while watching but “Marley and Me” was one of them. It brought to me the feelings of knowing how dogs become part of your family and the sorrow that comes from losing one of them.

Today I woke up to Minnie and Couper sleeping on top of me and it was really sweet to cuddle with them for a bit before getting up. Also another reason I am grateful for the family dogs is that they are usually the most excited to see me when I come home.

122. Today I am grateful for my Aunt Ruth

Another thing I look forward to at Christmas time is visiting with my Aunt Ruth. She is severely disabled and lives in a group home in Vancouver. While she can’t walk or talk or move most of her body she can show emotion and she is always so happy to see us. When we walk into her room her face lights up and she has a huge smile. I can especially see the love she has for my dad (her brother). During our Christmas visit my family sings Christmas carols to her and the other residents and staff, which (I think) they all enjoy. We also make sure to bring an aero chocolate bar for Aunt Ruth because those are her favourite. I am grateful for the inspiration that my Aunt has on my life and the lives of her other family members. Although she does not experience the same quality of life as most people she has a huge impact and influence on the lives of others. I also know that one day she will have a perfect body.

121. Today I am grateful for Christmas!

I love Christmas, it is my favourite holiday! Especially now that I live away from my family I value this time even more to be with my family. I love the lights and decorations and Christmas carols. I also love buying Christmas gifts, I don’t spend a lot of money on gifts but I enjoy picking gifts for the special people on my list. This year I also made two gifts which I think mean a lot to the people I made them for as well as for me.  For my parents I made a plaque with a picture of the Cardston temple with the saying “Where families become forever”, The Cardston temple is where my parents were sealed as well as having Melissa and I sealed to them so it has a special meaning for our family. For my sister and her husband I put together a scrapbook of their wedding photos. They were married at Christmas time 6 years ago so I imagine that adds even more meaning to their Christmas season. It’s also fun to discover what gifts people choose for me. I also love Christmas dinner! J

However, what I love most about Christmas is reflecting on the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We know that Christ wasn’t born on December 25 but it’s when his birth is recognized and I think that should be embraced throughout the world. I am grateful for the Saviors example that we are shown in the scriptures and for his gospel. I know that it is through Jesus Christ that peace comes to me personally and can where peace can be established on the earth.

120. Today I am grateful for Christmas traditions

Often Christmas is also a time to spend with extended family members. I haven’t grown up around very many extended family members, particularly cousins. The cousins I did spend the most time with growing up live on Vancouver Island. During our teen years, Melissa and I enjoyed taking the ferry and spending the weekend ever few months or so.

During the Christmas season our families usually spend a day together and do a gift exchange and just enjoy catching up. One year my family will go the Island and the next year their family will come to the mainland. This year it was our turn to go over and today (Christmas Eve) seemed to work best for everyone. We took the early ferry over this morning and because there were no reservations left to book we went on as walk on passengers and then my Aunt and Uncle brought two vehicles over to pick us up. It was really nice to visit with them, even if it was just for a few hours.
This is one family tradition that I look forward to every year. As we take the ferry back I am also excited about participating in other Christmas Eve family traditions. Over the past several years we have started a tradition going door to door singing Christmas Carols to our neighbours. None of us are great singers but our neighbours love it and we have a lot of fun doing it. At least I do. Another tradition we have is reading the “Christmas Story” in the Book of Luke from the Bible. My Dad reads the scriptures and the ‘kids’ act it out. Afterwards each of us takes turns opening one gift. This is a tradition that lots of families have but for us it is an adaptation of a German tradition. My mom grew up following the German tradition of opening all the gifts on Christmas Eve. I love having family traditions and I am grateful for them.
I hope to have my own family someday where I can pass these traditions on, include other traditions from my husband’s family and create more.

119. Today I am grateful to be home for Christmas

Miky and the cute gingerbread house she made
Yay! I am Home! This year is the latest I have ever been home for Christmas. I guess that’s what happens when you’re working. I had a fun day at work though, joining the classroom for a pyjama party and watching a “Charlie Brown Christmas”. I am also really grateful for 2 of my coworkers, one gave me a ride to work and another gave me a ride to the airport which was really nice. I washed my car last night and it was nice to know that it would stay nice and clean and dry in the garage for the next 2 weeks.

Anyways, back to my family. I hadn’t seen them since the summer and as far as Christmas; there is just something about being with your family that increases the Christmas spirit. We watched The Kranks Christmas together tonight which was kind of corny but funny and also touched on family togetherness over the Christmas season. I am really excited for the next 2 weeks because I will be spending one week here in BC and a week in Utah with Melissa and her family. I will get to see everyone! J

118. Today I am grateful to know that there is life after death

Rachelle Elliott (middle)
In my first entry I wrote about a friend of mine who passed away and how I had wondered if she knew how grateful I was for her and our friendship. It was 6 years ago today. Rachelle was a friend who was always there when I needed someone to talk to, always there when I wanted someone to be with. She cared more about other people being happy or doing something for others than her own happiness and her own needs or wants.  She made me laugh.

Often something will happen and I will think to myself, Rachelle would have loved to have been there or she would have thought this was really funny. At the time Melissa (my twin) was pregnant with her first child and Rachelle was so excited for Melissa to be a mom and was really looking forward to meeting the baby. Perhaps she did.
It was hard to accept that Rachelle had passed away; it didn’t seem real until the day of her funeral. The funeral was held after Christmas and I was given an opportunity to speak. Over that Christmas season I reflected a lot on the Savior and the atonement and crucifixion. I know that Jesus Christ provided a way for us to return to live with Him and our Heavenly Father again. I know that each one of us has a purpose to our life, no matter how long our mortal experience is. I know that there is life after death and continuing work for us to accomplish and I am grateful for that knowledge.

117. Today I am grateful for the beautiful sunset on the shortest day of the year

As I was driving home from work I was amazed by the breathtaking beauty of the sunset. December 21 is famous for being the shortest day of the year and I am grateful that the day ended beautifully. While watching the sunset this evening I felt the love that Heavenly Father has for his children and for the earth. The sun setting symbolized to me that each day is a gift that should be cherished and that we need to take time to recognize the beauty of each day.

Tuesday 20 December 2011

116. Today I am grateful for lunch with my co-workers and getting out of work early

Twice a year the agency I work for takes its employers out for lunch and give them the afternoon off (with pay). One is at the end of the school year before the classroom staff leaves for the summer and the other is just before Christmas. It was really nice to go out for lunch with my coworkers and get to talk with a few of them and it was also really nice to have the afternoon off. I really love my job and the work I do but it is also nice to have employers who recognize that it is important to have some time to yourself, relax and to feel appreciated.

115. Today I am grateful for my brother, Craig

Craig on his first birthday
When I think back to my childhood one of the first things that come to mind is the fun I had playing with my twin sister and my brother. Craig is 3 years younger than me and for a long time it was the three of us. One of the games we would play was our own versions of game shows where Craig would be the game show host. We would also play star search where our parents would be the judges. We really need to dig out those videos. On second thought, maybe not ... hahaha. Craig has always been able to, and still does, make me laugh. I have plenty of stories to share with his future wife and children.

One of the things I admire about Craig is his desire and willingness to help others. This past summer I went home to BC for a week and one of the reasons I went was to buy my Moms car. However, I didn’t want to drive back to Edmonton on my own so Craig not only offered to come with me but he drove the whole way. I really enjoyed the conversations we had on that road trip and playing some more childhood games of “I am going on a vacation and I’m bringing with me ...” and taking turns naming countries, movies, etc beginning with each letter of the alphabet.
Today is Craig’s Birthday and I want to wish him a wonderful birthday and let him know that I am grateful that he is my brother.

Sunday 18 December 2011

114. Today I am grateful for a Sunday school lesson on gratitude

Today our Sunday school lesson was on gratitude and I really liked how the Sunday school teacher gave the lesson. Being the last Sunday of the year our ward was meeting I think the instructors were able to choose their own topics. It seemed fitting that the topic of the class I attended was on gratitude. Our Sunday school teacher gave the class a topic such as “A person” or a “physical ability” and then gave each person an opportunity to respond. I have found that it can be difficult sometimes to come up with something I am grateful for each day. Particularly when it comes to simple things that may not readily come to mind; however, often simple things can bring so much joy.

I am also grateful for this Sunday school teacher; she is such a wonderful example to me of a genuine and sincere person. The enthusiasm, optimism and gratitude for life she shows, despite enduring many challenges has also been an inspiration to me.

113. Today I am grateful to be a bridesmaid

Yesterday I wrote about my gratitude to witness a friend’s wedding and today was another day of wedding fun at the reception. As one of her bridesmaids, I am also grateful that I was able to play a part in the planning and celebration. It’s not about the title of “bridesmaid” as I would have done everything I did (well ... maybe except for wearing a velvet dress) regardless. I am grateful though that my friend valued my friendship enough to have wanted me by her side as she planned her wedding.

Friday 16 December 2011

112. Today I am grateful to have witnessed my friend’s marriage sealing

I went back to the temple today, but this time it was to witness the sealing of one of my best friends. It was so wonderful to see my friend and her husband to make covenants with each other and God and to be sealed for eternity. I am excited to see what the future holds for them.

I was one of her bridesmaids and after the sealing we had a really fun photo shoot and then went out for dinner. The groom’s mother paid for everyone which was really nice of her and appreciated.
I am also grateful for my supervisor for allowing me to take the day off to attend the wedding.

Thursday 15 December 2011

111. Today I am grateful that the Edmonton temple has reopened

Today I had the opportunity to go to the Edmonton LDS temple for the first time since it closed in June for renovations. It is great having a temple so close by!

110. Today I am grateful for this heart-warming rendition of “Where are you Christmas”

Yesterday I posted a video of Josh Groban singing O’ Holy Night which of course is amazing. Today I came across this video that had just been uploaded that I fell in love with. There is a Utah-based music group; I believe it includes two men, called the PianoGuys. I never heard about them before today but they seem like a pretty cool group. In this video they are playing the music to “Where are You Christmas”, most of the song is instrumental which is beautiful but the part I love the most is at the end when the pianist daughter comes out to sing the chorus of the song.  She is such a beautiful little girl with a beautiful voice. After she sings she runs to hug her dad and you can just feel the love between them.

I am grateful for all the wonderful Christmas songs and music that fill me with joy. It is one of the things I love most about Christmas!

Tuesday 13 December 2011

109. Today I am grateful for Josh Groban and O’ Holy Night

My favourite singer, singing my favourite Christmas song! This song itself stirs within me a powerful emotion of peace and love for others and for my Savior. Combine that with Josh Groban’s amazing voice and it is even more powerful.

Monday 12 December 2011

108. Today I am grateful for Christmas lights

Another thing I love about Christmas time is the lights. I love seeing houses and buildings lit up for Christmas. And the streets decorated with lights and snowflakes. It makes everything look Merry and Bright!

Sunday 11 December 2011

107. Today I am grateful for the love of God

Today I was reading my scriptures and I came across a scripture that I have read and heard many times. John 3:16-17 which reads “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”

While reading this scripture, I was overcome with an increased testimony and gratitude for the love of God. Being Christmas time, we recognize the birth of Christ, the son of God. However, it is because of God’s love for us that Christ was sent to earth to save us. I love how the scripture says that Christ was not sent to the world to condemn us but to save us. We know from the scriptures that Christ was not judgemental. He did give us commandments to follow but he showed us how to live through love. Just as our Heavenly Father loves us so does our Savior, Jesus Christ who taught us to love each other.
Reading this scripture today has increased my desire to be more loving to everyone. I am grateful for that as well.

Saturday 10 December 2011

106. Today I am grateful that I won’t need to buy more new tires

I took my car in to a tire shop today to get the winter tires put on. I also asked them if they could check my tires for leaks as the tire pressure has been dropping quite a bit lately. It turns out that they just needed a good cleaning due to build up of gunk between the tires and rims. I am very grateful that I will not have to buy more new tires in the spring!

Friday 9 December 2011

105.Today I am grateful for the ward Christmas party

I attended our ward Christmas party today and I am grateful for all those who organized the party and prepared the meal. I am also grateful that we were allowed to take home some of the wall decorations, paper stars, which I used to put up on our walls to decorate for Christmas.

Thursday 8 December 2011

104. Today I am grateful for my brother-in-law, JJ

Today is my brother-in-law’s birthday! Because I want to write about people I am grateful for as well as things I figure birthdays are a good day to share my gratitude for that person. I am grateful for JJ mostly because he treats my sister well and makes her happy. He also makes me laugh (even though the line between when it’s time to be funny and time to be serious may get crossed sometimes). He’s also always willing to help others out which is a quality that I admire.

Happy Birthday JJ!

Wednesday 7 December 2011

103. Today I am grateful for Christmas carollers

One of my favourite things about Christmas is Christmas carollers, whether they are standing on the streets singing or going from house to house. You don’t see it very often these days but it’s something I enjoy participating in and seeing. One of my favourite family traditions is soon before Christmas, usually on Christmas Eve; we go around to the homes in our neighbourhood and sing Christmas carols. We’re not really that musical but we enjoy it and our neighbours love it.

Tonight I enjoyed listening to a women’s choir sing Christmas carols at the Legislature building. Singing really does help to feel the Christmas spirit. They were beautiful singers. As well as the legislature was decorated beautifully for Christmas inside and a beautiful lights display outside. They also served hot chocolate for patrons to enjoy while listening to the choirs. It’s nice to see that our tax dollars are being put to good use. J

Tuesday 6 December 2011

102. Today I am grateful for times when life’s trials are put into perspective

I went out for ice cream with a friend tonight and parked in a nearby parking lot. I didn’t see any sign indicating that it was paid parking but a few minutes after I parked I was issued a ticket. The first thing I noticed was that almost every car had a ticket, second it was a Tuesday evening and it was cold, third I finally saw the sign at a far corner of the parking lot. With all these things combined, I drove home feeling very annoyed and then I got to a point where the traffic was backed up. Starting to feel even more frustrated I looked over and saw what appeared to be a very bad accident. My train of thought changed and I realized that this “trial” I was experiencing was not that bad and that it will help me to be sure to scan the whole parking lot for signs in the future.

Monday 5 December 2011

101. Today I am grateful for my FHE group

Family Home Evening (FHE) is church program that encourages families to set aside Monday evenings to spend with our family that includes a gospel lesson and an activity. Being that I am in a Young Single Adult (YSA) ward (congregation) were most of the members live away from their families, we are broken up into family home evening groups. There are two leaders (male and female) for each “family” group. Both of my leaders are really young but they are great! I had a lot of fun at our FHE tonight! We played silly games with a Christmas theme, such as playing charades, acting out Christmas songs. It’s nice to have an FHE group where we can get to know people more in a smaller setting. I’m looking forward to getting to know those in my group more.

Sunday 4 December 2011

100. Today I am grateful for the First Presidency Christmas Devotional

The first presidency Christmas devotional is something that I look forward to every year. I love the messages the leaders of the church share to members and others attending worldwide: Their reflections on the Christmas Season, testimonies of the Savior and their encouragement to viewers on the things that we could focus on or do for others.  I also love listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing!

Tonight I was with other members of my ward at our Bishops house, where we had planned to watch the devotional after our potluck. However, due to technological difficulties we were not able to watch the broadcast. When I got home, I put my pyjamas on and crawled into bed with my laptop and watched the devotional from lds.org. I usually go to a church building to watch it and really enjoy watching it in a church-setting but it was also kind of nice to watch it alone and reflect on the messages given without any distractions around me.
Watch, listen or read the talks from this year’s First Presidency Devotional.
During his talk Pres. Eyring announced the Church’s “gift to the world” – Bible Video’s showing the life of Jesus Christ. I am really excited to watch each of these videos as they become available and hope that they will help all who view them come to better know Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World.

Saturday 3 December 2011

99. Today I am grateful for a successful bridal shower

In a couple of weeks, one of my best friends will be married and I feel privileged to be one of her bridesmaids. Today me and the other bridesmaid held a bridal shower for her at my place which I am really glad turned out well. It seemed that people had a lot of fun and enjoyed the shower, including the bride-to-be. It was also fun to have people over. Besides the Thanksgiving dinner we had, we haven’t really had too many people over to our home.

Also, I am grateful for all the yummy food that Tiffany (the other bridesmaid) bought and for help from Tiffany and my roomates with decorating. When your short, it's hard to reach high places to put up things like streamers. hahaha. Good thing Tiffany is super tall!

Friday 2 December 2011

98. Today I am grateful for Christmas concerts

Tonight was the Institute Christmas concert and I just felt so excited on my way there. It was really good with a great variety of music. I really liked some of the different types of songs such as the African ones which we typically don’t hear in church but it was really cool. I just love Christmas time and this was a great way to start off the various Christmas events that will happen throughout the month.

Thursday 1 December 2011

97.Today I am grateful for earning flex time

Today was our third and last day of parent/teacher meetings. It meant long days and getting home late but it also meant earning flex time (overtime) hours. I am grateful for this because it will allow me to take off some time at Christmas in addition to my Vacation days so I spend some time at home for the Holiday's.  I am really excited because I will be taking 2 weeks off, spending one week in BC with my family and another week in Utah with my sister and her family. Her new baby is due Dec. 29 and I will be there Dec. 30, hoping to meet him!

Tuesday 29 November 2011

95.Today I am grateful for a little Christmas tree

It seems that Christmas is in full swing now and everywhere I look I see beautiful Christmas trees. I really wanted a Christmas tree but didn’t want to spend a lot of money on one. I also only have a few ornaments so if I bought a big tree I would need to buy more ornaments too. Well, I went to the dollar store today and bought a little tree for a dollar. I then went to Michael’s and bought a little star to put on top. I took it home and decorated it and put some ribbon around it. I love my little Christmas tree!

Monday 28 November 2011

94. Today I am grateful for a 2012 Day Timer

My job requires doing a lot of different things including meetings and home visits so a day timer is defiantly a requirement. The organization purchased day timers for us this past week which I am grateful for! I am also grateful that this new day timer will help me to stay organized and on top of things for 2012. I should also add that because I started in August, for this year I got a notebook and wrote out each day on a page and made a homemade day timer so I am also grateful that I don’t have to do that again.

Sunday 27 November 2011

93. Today I am grateful for Prayer

I am grateful for prayer and the ability it gives me to communicate with my Heavenly Father.

Saturday 26 November 2011

92. Today I am grateful for a second Thanksgiving

I have a roommate from the USA and so we celebrated American Thanksgiving today. Although it was really this past Thursday, she had classes late and so we celebrated today. It was great to have some friends come over and eat delicious food. Who can say no to more turkey and good food?

Friday 25 November 2011

91. Today I am grateful for Christmas movies

I have started getting into the Christmas spirit, I love Christmas time! One of the things I love is Christmas movies, funny one, touching ones and ones that share what Christmas is all about. Tonight I watched ‘Elf’ with my roommates. I think Elf is one of the funniest movies ever and ones of those movies that you can quote often. My favourite is: “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear.”

Thursday 24 November 2011

90. Today I am grateful for contact lenses

Yesterday I wrote about my gratitude for eye-glasses, well I am even more grateful for contact lenses. I also think it’s even cooler how contact lenses are made and sit right on your eyes to give you perfect vision. It is more of a luxury then glasses are but do make some things a bit easier, like applying eye makeup and wearing sun glasses. I also find them more comfortable, well maybe except for late at night when my eyes start feeling really dry.

Wednesday 23 November 2011

89. Today I am grateful for eye-glasses

I’m pretty blind and so I rely on my glasses or contacts to see. I mostly wear contacts during the day but sometimes it’s nice to get a break from contacts and wear my glasses. I worked for an optical store for 3 years while I was at the University and have experience with various types of lenses and watching them be edged. However, I still think it’s really cool how glass and plastic can be used to help people see.

Tuesday 22 November 2011

88. Today I am grateful for being wrapped up in a blanket fresh from the dryer

Right now I am wrapped up in a blanket that I just took out of the dryer and it feels so good! A great feeling of comfort and warmth.

Monday 21 November 2011

87. Today I am grateful for people who know stuff about cars

I don’t really know much about cars so I am grateful for people who do. Yesterday my roommate noticed that my tires were low so she checked the tire pressure and they were really dangerously low. I learned that cold air compresses tires; therefore, changing the tire pressure. Today we went to the gas station to fill the tires up. My roommate was showing me how to fill the tires up with air and check the tire pressure. During our “lesson” we had two guys ask us if we needed help. I also learned that if you look like you don’t know what you’re doing some guy will help you. I can give people the opportunity to serve me. J Although, my roommate also pointed out that sometimes they are guys you might not want helping you.

The fact that the tire pressure was so low likely contributed to my issues with driving home on Monday. However, I do have winter tires ordered. My Dad (who is a general manger for a major trucking company) was able to work out a good deal for me from a tire company. I am grateful for that too.

Sunday 20 November 2011

86. Today I am grateful for “Today”

I was thinking today about what I might write about and a few things came to mind but then I went on the LDS.org website and read an article about talks given by Elder Hales on gratitude. This article included parts of his talks given during a general conference address in 1992 as well as this past General conference in October. It was a really powerful talk about the importance of expressing gratitude to our Heavenly Father and to others.

I think part of writing in this blog and challenging myself to recognize daily specific blessings in my life is to also recognize the importance of gratitude. During my Thanksgiving entry I took some time to reflect on my experience with expressing gratitude daily and I think that is something that is important to do on an ongoing basis.
One of the things Elder Hales said is “Gratitude brings a peace that helps us overcome the pain of adversity and failure. Gratitude on a daily basis means we express appreciation for what we have now without qualification for what we had in the past or desire in the future.”  I like what he said about having gratitude for what we have now. I don’t often dwell on negative past experiences but I do often think about and worry that some of my desires for the future may not be fulfilled, as I wrote about in my first entry. While I will not give up on those goals and will strive to do what I can to achieve what I desire most in this life, I do also recognize the many blessings that I do have. I am grateful for where I am today, for what I have and I am happy with who I am.

As I reflect on my blog entries I realized that I have started each entry with “Today I am grateful ...” That phrase now has more meaning for me as I continue to write in this blog.

85. Today I am grateful for my duvet

I woke up early yesterday morning freezing and thinking to myself that I needed to get some more blankets. Then I remembered that I had a duvet so I got up and dug it out and then I was warm! I am grateful for my duvet to keep me warm on cold nights. J

84. Today I am grateful for Children

November 20 is National Child Day in Canada but I was able to participate in celebrations for this day at work today. It was really fun doing a play for the children and singing songs. I am grateful for the joy that children bring into my life. I am grateful for their meekness, humility and innocence. I am grateful for the cute things that they say and do and the fact that they are cute. It is important that adults nurture the children in their lives and let them be children but at the same time guide them in growing into future leaders and caregivers.

Children have rights but are not able to ensure that those rights are followed through. It is therefore important that adults ensure that children’s rights are protected and that their needs are met. National child day also recognizes the rights of children. Click on the link to read about what those rights are. You can also download a colouring book for your children that helps them to know what their rights are (in terms they can understand).

Here are my favourite children:

I don’t see them nearly as often as I would like but I love every opportunity I have to spend time with them and to talk to them over the phone or through the computer. We actually have a lot in common. J
Who are the special children in your life?

83. Today I am grateful for "All Christmas music" radio stations

I love Christmas music and I love radio stations that play continuous Christmas music during the Christmas season. Edmonton’s Lite 95.7 started playing continuous Christmas music this past weekend. Some people may think it’s too early but I think it’s great for bringing out the Christmas spirit.

82. Today I am grateful for a flight home for Christmas

I recently booked a flight to Salt Lake to spend some time with my twin sister and her family during the Christmas holidays. I got a pretty good deal flying from Seattle. I am really excited about seeing my sister and nieces and hopefully meet my nephew who is due to be born on Dec. 29. I will be spending New Years with them so I am planning on banging on some pots and pans with my nieces. I am also excited to be spending Christmas with the rest of my family in BC. I was hesitant to book a flight right now because it was crazy expensive, over $300 for a one-way flight to Vancouver on Dec. 23! It’s a one hour flight!  I was definitely going home for Christmas, it was just a matter of deciding whether to book a flight or hope the prices go down. However, I got a message from my Dad saying that he and my mom decided to use some avion points to fly me home for Christmas. I am really grateful that they wanted to help me out and also that they want me to come home. J

Thanks Mom & Dad!

81. Today I am grateful for a snow brush

There were a few things left behind at our house by the people who lived here before and one of them was a snow brush so I decided to use it. The scarper part worked great but the brush didn’t work at all. My roommate came home last night and told me she bought me something. It was a snow brush and not just any snow brush but a pink one! She said she though of me when saw it and insisted that it was a gift, which I thought was really nice of her. Especially after the evening she had where a normal 5 minute drive turned into 3 hours of trying to get home in the snow storm.

This same roommate also took my car into a tire place today to see about getting winter tires for it; however nothing is in-stock and will take at least a week. Apparently there are only a few different types of winter tires that my car can use and they are also quite expensive. I have a few people looking into tires and prices for me. I just feel like I will feel more confident driving with winter tires so hopefully everything will be ok until then.
I am very grateful for the gift and her willingness to help me!

80. Today I am grateful for making it home safely

Today was the first major snowfall which came this afternoon. I am from the Vancouver area and so winter driving is foreign to me. Sure, we would get big snowfalls every now and then and icy roads, but like many Vancouverites, I didn’t drive then. Up to now I had always taken the bus or rode with experienced winter drivers. Now I have to experience winter driving and I will say that driving home today was pretty scary. I learned that snow and mud tires are not good on ice and so I will be looking at getting real snow tires. Although, I am assuming there will be a mad dash for winter tires this week.  I also learned that my breaks work great, so that’s good! Driving home today I prayed the whole way that I would get home safely without hitting anything (I was sliding a lot) and I did. I know that Heavenly Father was watching over me but I also believe that he expects me to help keep myself and others safe which includes getting tires made for icy conditions.

79. Today I am grateful for the baptismal covenant

Melissa, Dad, Sara-Jayne
November 11, 1990
On November 11, I wrote about remembering the sacrifices the soldiers made for their country during times of war. November 11 is also an important date to me personally as it was the day I was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was eight years old. When I was baptized I took upon myself the name of Christ and promised to always remember him. This act of remembrance is even more important than remembering the sacrifices of the soldiers. Christ sacrificed himself for the world.

Last night I was sorting through a couple of boxes I still had to unpack and I found a printout of this quote by President George Q. Cannon:
“When we went forth into the waters of baptism and covenanted with our Father in Heaven to serve Him and keep His commandments, He bound Himself also by covenant to us that He would never desert us, never leave us to ourselves, never forget us, that in the midst of trials and hardships, when everything was arrayed against us, He would be near unto us and would sustain us. That was His covenant.”

I am grateful for the baptismal covenant and to know that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me. I know that I am never alone. I am also grateful for the example of Jesus Christ who showed us the way and provided a way for us to return to live with our Father in Heaven.

78. Today I am grateful for the first snowfall

I woke up this morning to a dusting of snow on the rooftops. Although, summer is my favourite season, I really like the transitions between the seasons and I love the first snowfall. There is something romantic and magical about snow. I feel like the Christmas season should start today!

Ask me again, how I feel about the snow in January ... hahaha.

77. Today I am grateful for those who fought for our freedom

Harry Johnson, WWI
Today at 11:00 many people paused for two minutes of silence to remember those who have fought to keep our country free. I went to a Remembrance Day ceremony today at the University of Alberta and behind me sat two young children with their grandparents who they talked to them a bit about Remembrance Day and what it meant. The little boy started talking about soldiers and said “Soldiers are people who go to war because they care about their country. Some of them come back and some of them don’t”. I thought that was pretty profound coming from a child who was probably about 5 or 6. I also appreciated that these grandparents where teaching their grandchildren the importance of remembering.

On Remembrance Day there are two soldiers that I like to take the time to remember: My Grandpa Harry George Arthur Johnson and Great Grandfather Harry Johnson.
Harry G.A. Johnson, WWII
Great Grandpa Harry was born June 25, 1873 in Binfield, Berkshire, England and later moved to Fulham in London. He   served in the First World War with the 1st battalion of the Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). During his service he became terminally ill and was sent home where he died on April 7, 1917. He is buried in the Fulham old cemetery among the other casualties of the First World War. He left behind a wife and six children, ranging in ages from 7 months old to 14 years old.

Grandpa Harry was born April 16, 1906 in Fulham, London, England. I recently found the ship record that shows that he immigrated to Canada when he was 18 years old. He landed in Halifax and lived in several parts of Canada before settling in Vancouver. When the Second World War broke out, like his father, Harry Jr. also answered the call to serve his country. Grandpa Harry served with the 10th Field Squadron Royal Canadian Engineers. I have his war medals that were given to me by one of my uncles which is a pretty cool heirloom to be in possession of.  I was 6 years old when my Grandpa Harry died but I do have fond memories of him which I am grateful for.

Grave site of Harry Johnson
Fulham, London, England
My Grandpa wanted to be cremated and have his ashes spread across his father’s grave site. My uncle fulfilled his request and took his remains to England. In 2001, I went to London, England with my dad and we visited Great Grandpa Harry’s grave site. In memory of My Grandpa and his service with the Canadian army we placed a small Canadian flag at the grave site.

I am grateful for the service given by my grandpa and Great Grandpa and hope to pass on their stories to future generations.

Is there anyone in particular that you remember on Remembrance Day? What is their story?

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning
  We will remember them.”

76. Today I am grateful for little surprises

I got into work this morning to find a pretty mug and package of apple cider on my desk. Little things like that do help you to feel appreciated, especially when it is not expected.

75. Today I am grateful for dental & health benefits

I have now passed the 3 month mark at my job and received information about the benefits package. There isn’t anything I immediately need but it is reassuring to have benefits.

74. Today I am grateful for gloves to keep my hands warm

I have only had to wear a hat and scarf a few times this fall but my hands get cold easily. Therefore, I am grateful for gloves to keep my hands warm.

73. Today I am grateful for Hymns

As part of my scripture study I like to listen to a hymn and then read the corresponding scriptures that are listed in the hymn book. I love the spirit that is felt by the hymns. Music can have a powerful influence on the lives of individuals, for good and bad. I am grateful for good music, particularly hymns. Hymns have the power to comfort in times of need, help us to feel spiritually uplifted and increase our understanding of gospel doctrines and principles.

72. Today I am grateful for an extra hour of sleep

Early this morning Day Lights Savings Time ended and the clocks were moved back an hour. I heard of a few people who stayed up to watch the time change from 2am to 1am. I guess it would be kind of neat, like waiting for midnight Jan. 1 for a new year to start. Well, maybe not quite. However, I defiantly took advantage of sleeping in a bit by going to bed early and getting the extra hour of sleep. In fact, I slept in longer than expected. I like to wake up early on Sunday so I had set my alarm for what I had thought was 7:30 but really I had set it for 8:30. However, having gotten used to waking up in the dark, I ended up waking up at 8 because the sun was shining through my bedroom window.

71. Today I am grateful for The New Family Search program

It seems that many genealogy websites have been striving to create a “world pedigree”, a family tree linking the world together. The site that comes closest to this is The New.Familysearch website. It is really cool, I could write a lot about it but I would recommend for everyone to check it out for themselves and register. I have had and continue to have success with this program and I love it.

Several years ago I was a stake family history consultant and attended a meeting where this program was first introduced. A lot of work and planning went into this program as well as lots of beta testing. It combines various genealogical records and resources so there are often duplicate records for each person. I spent over a year (a few hours a week) combining duplicate records and adding/correcting information between this program and my database. It was time consuming but worth it. For those who think there is no genealogical work for them to do, combing duplicate records would be a worthwhile project to take on. You just might find distant relatives and an ancestor or two as well.

70. Today I am grateful for the Poppy

In the 2 weeks leading up to Remembrance Day poppies are sold in Canada and throughout the Commonwealth. It is worn to remember the soldiers who died during the wars. I learned today that this year marks 90 years of poppies being distributed in Canada. I think it is important at this time to remember the sacrifices made by soldiers so that we can enjoy the freedom we live today.

69. Today I am grateful for my car

As the mornings get a bit cooler, I am grateful to have a car to drive to work rather than waiting for the bus in the cold. It also makes grocery shopping a lot easier. I am also grateful that my mom got a new car for her birthday so that I could buy her older car. Meaning I got a pretty good deal and trusted the people I bought it from. I am a bit nervous though for winter driving as I never experienced true winter driving in BC. If I can make it through the winter with me and my car in one piece, that will be another thing to be grateful for.

68. Today I am grateful for making it to November without any snow

One thing I have come to learn about Edmonton is that the winters are harsh. Part way through the winter I begin feeling as though I am living inside a snow globe. I usually like the snow for about 2 weeks and then I am ready for it to go away, not the 6 months it can last for. However, I do like the first snowfall.  I was born in Calgary and lived there for six years before moving to the Vancouver area and I remember going trick-or-treating in the snow. In fact, my first Halloween in Surrey I remember telling my dad that it can’t be Halloween because there was no snow. My dad, who grew up in Vancouver then explained “It doesn’t snow here on Halloween”. Well, this year Edmonton also enjoyed a snow-free Halloween. In fact we enjoyed a snow free October and beautiful weather. Listening to the radio this morning it was mentioned that the last time it did not snow in October was in 1963. I enjoy being part of the new statistic.

67.Today I am grateful for relatives in Edmonton

I moved out to Edmonton 5 years ago for school. While there were a few people I knew out here I didn’t have any family in Edmonton. My first year here I went home for the summer and during that summer I got an email from someone who had found some family history info I had posted on a website. He explained that he too was related to this family. He then mentioned that he had recently moved to Edmonton from England. I excitedly wrote back confirming that we were indeed 3rd cousins once removed and mentioned that I too had recently moved to Edmonton. I met with him, his wife and daughter and instantly they welcomed me as a part of their family. He shared that he believes that no matter how distantly related, family is family. Although, when you have spent so much time researching your family history and corresponding with distant relatives, 3rd cousins is actually pretty close.

In the past few years they have invited me over for dinner several times so I decide that it was about time that I made dinner for them. I am grateful for the opportunity that we had to enjoy dinner together today. For the times we have enjoyed in the past and the times we will continue to enjoy. It’s great to have wonderful friends in Edmonton but it is also nice to have relatives in the city as well.

66. Today I am grateful for my co-workers

On Friday at work we had an all day meeting for those who work in the family support division. I enjoy the team building part of these meetings which sometimes includes baking something. Friday’s meeting, our activity was writing what we appreciate about our co-workers and the reading out what others said about us. It was a nice warm-fuzzy experience. I am really grateful for my co-workers and supervisor who are all great examples of compassion, knowledge and experience. They have been a tremendous help to me and have helped me to feel accepted as part of their team.

65. Today I am grateful to be at church on time

Since moving into my new place I came to the realization that we hadn’t gotten to church before the opening hymn began. I always like to get to places early or at least on time, particularly church on Sunday. One of my roommates and I take turns driving to church and today was my turn so I decided that I needed to let my roommates know that it is important for me to be at church early and gave them a time that we were leaving. It just meant a little more effort in getting ready on time with 3 girls and one shower. We ended up leaving one minute past that time and getting to church before the meeting began. I enjoyed listening to the prelude music before and not being stressed about being late for church. Hopefully this will be a continuing trend. J

64. Today I am grateful for inspiring sports stories

I really do enjoy playing sports, but I am not very athletic when it comes to playing team sports. When I am playing a sport with a group of people I often wish we can break off into two teams: One for the good people and one for the not-so-good people. Then I wouldn’t have to feel bad for helping my team loose. However, I do really enjoy inspiring movies about sports teams or athletes. Maybe I can work towards becoming one of those people. Hahaha.

Here is a real-life example of an inspiring athlete that I found circulating facebook today.

63. Today I am grateful to be a princess

On Monday, I wrote about my sister and how she lives up to her name. Well my name means (Sara) Princess- (Jayne) God is Gracious. I have always loved princesses, fairy tales and “happily ever after” movies. I am sure that I have spent most of my Halloweens dressed up as a princess, which includes tonight at the YSA Halloween dance. I don’t consider myself a “princess” in the way it is referred to describe someone’s personality. However, I do see myself as a princess of God who expects me to do great things. I believe that we can expect to at the end of lives say “... and I lived happily ever after”. I also touched on this idea in this post. I would encourage you to watch the “Happily Ever After” music video. It is so cute and if you didn’t see yourself as a princess before watching this video, I hope you will after.

Because God is gracious, I am his princess.

62. Today I am grateful for a hug from a child

Today at work the children had their dress up day to celebrate Halloween. Part of the celebration included trick-or-treating around the building. I came out of my office to see the children in their costumes. One of the little girls broke away from the rest of the group and ran up to me to give me a hug. It was so sweet! It is nice to feel loved and hugs are good for helping someone feel loved.

61. Today I am Grateful to be a Visiting Teacher

I love the Visit Teaching program! This is a program that is run through the Relief Society organization (Women’s group) of the church. Each woman is assigned a companion and usually 2 or 3 women to visit with. We are expected to visit with them in their homes once a month whenever possible. During this visit we get to know the girls we are assigned a bit better, find out if there is anything they need help with and share a spiritual message. With recent ward (congregation) boundary changes and lots of new people in the ward there was a major reorganizing of the visit teaching routes. I was excited to get my route and learn who I was assigned to visit with. I know one of the girls pretty well but my companion and another girl we visit I don’t know very well. I am looking forward to getting to know these girls more! This program is a wonderful way to see that the temporal and spiritual needs of the Relief Society members are met.

60. Today I am grateful for the Northern Lights

Last night was the first time I saw the Northern Lights, which I also learned are called Aurora Borealis. It was beautiful and I am grateful to have taken some time to take in the beauty of the Northern Lights. Here is a photo I found on the weather network.

59. Today I am grateful for my sister, Alexandra

I was 11 years old when Alexandra was born and I was really excited to have a new baby in the family. It had just been me, my twin sister and brother for awhile and secretly I really wanted a baby sister. Because her due date was at the end of October I nicknamed my unborn sibling pumpkin, a name I still call her sometimes.  I remember my Dad picking us up from the neighbours and being so excited to find out that I had a baby sister.  Before Alexandra was born, I somehow convinced my mom to let me be the first to hold the baby when we went to the hospital. My mom kept her promise and when my dad took us to the hospital to see our new baby sister for the first time I got to hold her first. For the first few months of her life, Melissa and I would often argue over whose turn it was to hold Alexandra. That is how we showed how much we loved her. J That little baby turned 18 years old today – where does the time go?

The name Alexandra means “Defender of The People” which I think exemplifies my Alexandra pretty well. She strives to look out for people and help those in need. She is a good friend and is passionate about the people (and animals) that she cares about. Close to April I was talking to Alexandra about my grad banquet coming up and suggested that she come out to Edmonton and be my date. Well, she asked our dad if she could go and got a flight out to Edmonton. It was fun even if there was still snow and it was cold.  We have had lots of fun together throughout the years and I look forward to more good times in the future. We don’t always see eye to eye on things but I will always love her for who she is. I want her to know that I am grateful to have her in my life as my sister.

58.Today I am grateful for Jesus Christ

Today at church, I was overcome for gratitude for Jesus Christ. For his life, example, mission and sacrifice for all mankind. The sacrament meeting talks focused on love and service. The greatest example we have of love and service is the Savior. He not only taught us to love and serve but commanded us to love and serve others. I have come to know that is through having love for others and serving them that we truly become Disciples of Christ. In Sunday school we talked about having faith in Christ. What does it mean to have faith in Christ? For me, it means knowing that he was foreordained to come to earth to live a perfect life and to atone for our sins so that we can have the opportunity to live with our Heavenly Father again. I know that it is through the atonement that I can be forgiven of my sins and that I can receive comfort during times of sadness, fear and loneliness.

My favourite hymn is “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” which exemplifies my love and gratitude for Jesus Christ, my Redeemer and Savior and the world.

57. Today I am grateful for Scrapbooking with a friend

I really enjoy scrapbooking but don’t end up working on my scrapbooks very often. I find, though, that scrapbooking with others gives me more motivation to work. I am grateful today to have an enjoyable time scrapbooking with a friend and finishing a page. I am currently working on a family scrapbook where I am creating a page for each year, including photos and write up of that year. I am working backwards; today I worked on the page for 2008 to add to 2009 and 2010. Hopefully I can get another year done before I jump ahead to work on 2011.

55. Today I am grateful for the new ‘Daughters in My Kingdom’ book

On Sunday I received a copy of the new “Daughters in My Kingdom: The History and Work of Relief Society” book. This book has been given to each woman in the church throughout the world. Receiving this book is an example to me of how valued women are in the church and the desire of our leaders for us to recognize the importance of Relief Society and the work we do. I am looking forward to continue reading this book and to receive greater understanding, guidance and inspiration from it.

54. Today I am grateful for the Christmas Bureau

One of the things I love about my job is that I get to learn more about various programs in the city. Today I went to an information session for the Christmas Bureau at City Hall. Although, October seems a bit early to start thinking about Christmas, projects like this are worked on year round.

I am grateful that I have been fortunate enough to never have to worry about there being enough food at Christmas and I know that when I wake up on Christmas morning there will be gifts under the tree. However, there are many people who are struggling to make ends meet. I think it’s wonderful that there are programs like this to ensure that as many people as possible are able to enjoy the Christmas season. One of my Grandma's favourite saying's is "More blessed to give then to receive" which is true. In donating gifts, money and time to projects like this, we too will be able to feel more of the Christmas spirit. At Christmas time, we remember the birth of the Savior and what better way to reflect that then to follow his example in serving others and helping those in need.

Here is one of my favourite Christmas songs and videos that reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. How do you show that you have room for the Savior?

53. Today I am grateful for self defence classes

Tonight, I went to a self defence class for a relief society activity. It was hosted by the ward I was previously in so it was nice to see some of the girls I hadn’t seen in awhile. The class was taught by one of the members of the ward who is a police officer. She was a great instructor! I have been to a few self defence classes over the years but it’s always good to get a refresher and learn more techniques. Hopefully, I won’t ever have to use it and if I do, hopefully I remember what to do. What I found the most helpful was talking about what to do in various situations. After the class, I had to get gas and I was probably more aware of my surroundings than I have ever been.

52. Today I am grateful for the Bishopric

Today for Family Home Evening (FHE) we talked about gratitude. Something I have been hearing about a lot these days, likely because I am also thinking a lot about it. After the lesson we made candy grams for members of the Bishopric. Although, I do not know my new Bishopric that well, I am grateful for them and how they have all helped to make me feel welcome in the ward. They also dedicate a lot of their time to fulfill their church responsibilities and helping members of the ward, on top of their career and family responsibilities. I am also grateful that my membership records are now in the ward so I am now officially a member of the Highlands Ward.

51. Today I am grateful for walks with my roommates

One of my favourite things to do is go for walks, particularly when the weather is nice. So far this fall, every Sunday has been beautiful so I have taken advantage of the nice weather to go for a walk. I am blessed to live right by a beautiful park and to have roommates who also enjoy going for walks. I am grateful to have wonderful roommates!

Here is a photo of us on our walk today:

50. Today I am grateful to be involved with the Edmonton Food Bank project

During General Conference in April of this year, Elder Eyring spoke about the Church welfare program. This year, 2011, marks the 75th anniversary of the Church welfare program. In commemoration, Elder Eyring, on behalf of the first presidency invited members of the church worldwide to engage in a Day of Service; more specifically for wards and stakes to come up with a formal service project to benefit the community.

The Edmonton stakes of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints choose to organize a city wide food drive. Flyers were delivered to every neighbourhood and members were assigned routes to drive through and pick up donations. I arrived at our stake centre with one of my roommates and saw a large empty truck in the parking lot waiting to be filled up with donations. My roommate and I then joined with another member of our ward and drove around a nearby neighbourhood to collect donations. It was wonderful to see so many doorsteps with donations! A few people came out to greet me when I walked up to their doorstep to thank us for collecting donations for the Edmonton Food Bank. I then thanked them for their donation, which is what made the project successful.

In less than an hour we were back at the stake centre to see the truck filling up quickly and cars, vans, SUV’s and pickup trucks full of donations driving into the parking lot. People of all ages helped pick up donations and load the donations onto the truck. I loved seeing a group of children inside the truck helping to sort the donations. My heart was truly touched to see the community come together in donating much needed donations for the food bank. I only played a very small part in this project but I am grateful that I was a part of it.

The Edmonton Journal reported an early estimate of more than 71,500 pounds of food collected. Thank you Edmonton!

49. Today I am grateful for opportunities to get to know people better

I enjoy being social and talking with others. Today I am grateful for opportunities to get to know people a bit better, Perhaps those who I haven’t had many opportunities to talk with or meeting new people. Everyone you meet has the opportunity to influence your life in some way. Likewise, you also have an opportunity to influence the lives of those you meet.

48. Today I am grateful for religious freedom

Last month, Elder Dallin H. Oaks gave a CES broadcast address titled “Truth and Tolerance”. One of the things he spoke about was religious freedom, a right that is increasingly being threatened. Elder Oaks stated, “Some influential voices even question the extent to which our constitutions should protect the free exercise of religion, including the right to practice and preach religious principles.” He then went on to say, “We must also stand shoulder to shoulder with other believers to preserve and strengthen the freedom to advocate and practice our religious beliefs, whatever they are. “

I strive to understand the religious doctrine and principles of others. I believe that we are all children of God and as such each person deserves to be treated with love and kindness.

In the past couple of days I have seen several postings on facebook linking to a clip of CNN host Anderson Cooper interviewing Robert Jeffress who is known for bashing various religions, most recently calling Mormonism a cult. I wasn’t offended at all by his comments and actually thought the interview was a bit comical. However, I do think it’s sad to see that some people are so misinformed about my religion and also sad that some feel the need to attack other religions. There have also been several follow up articles from non-LDS people supporting the fact that members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are indeed Christians.

Here are two that I enjoyed:
Friend of Perry is enemy of almost everyone else - By Daniel Ruth
